Forward Deployed AI Engineer for US teams: from business problem to production

I work remotely as a contract Forward Deployed AI Engineer for US startups and product teams. I start with the operational problem, work directly with the people who own it, then design, build and deploy the complete solution: an AI agent, an n8n automation, an API integration or a custom Next.js application. You get one technical partner from discovery to production, with working software and measurable outcomes rather than a prototype handoff.

Business understanding

I start from the problem, not a frozen spec.

Production solution

A system that runs, not a demo.

AI agents

Text and voice, wired to the business.

Integrations

CRM, APIs, calendar, n8n.

Fast delivery

AI builders to go from need to code.

Single point of contact

From problem to production, no handover.

What is a Forward Deployed AI Engineer?

A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) works close to customers and operators to turn a business problem into production software. The role combines software engineering, technical consulting, product judgment and implementation. A Forward Deployed AI Engineer adds AI systems, workflow automation and model integration to that delivery responsibility.

The title was popularized by Palantir and is now used by AI companies including OpenAI and Anthropic. Unlike a developer waiting for a fixed specification, an FDE helps discover the right solution, builds it inside the customer's environment and remains accountable for whether it works in practice.

When a US startup needs a contract or fractional FDE

A contract FDE is useful when the problem crosses product, engineering and operations: a manual workflow is slowing the team down, an AI prototype must become reliable, several APIs need to work as one system, or a customer deployment needs technical ownership. You get senior execution without waiting to hire a full internal team.

I work asynchronously from Madagascar with planned overlap for US meetings, written decisions and visible delivery milestones. A typical engagement starts with a short technical and business review, moves to a scoped production release, then continues with monitoring and iteration when the system proves its value.

AI agents, automation and software I deploy

I build AI agents, remote n8n automation systems, API integrations and custom Next.js + Supabase applications. Common use cases include lead qualification, customer support with human handoff, document processing, internal reporting, CRM synchronization and operational tools.

The architecture fits the risk of the workflow: human approval before sensitive actions, retries and error paths around external APIs, logs for diagnosis, and ownership of deployment. The goal is not to add AI everywhere. It is to remove a measurable bottleneck with the simplest system that can operate reliably.

Production proof across product, AI and automation

My project portfolio includes the PaidMada mobile-money backend, the ScalApp management product, a live ElevenLabs voice agent for MadaVoyage and production n8n workflows for acquisition and operations. These projects combine interfaces, business logic, data, APIs and deployment rather than stopping at an isolated demo.

You work directly with the person who scopes and builds the system. That shortens feedback loops, keeps technical decisions connected to the business objective and gives you one accountable point of contact from the first workflow map to production.

Engagement model for US companies

The best fit is a defined operational problem that needs discovery and implementation: an automation to productionize, an internal tool to ship, an AI integration to make reliable or a customer workflow to connect end to end. I can own the first release and document the system for your team, or continue as a fractional technical partner.

My standard international rate is $400 per day, with a written scope and estimate within 48 hours. A classic developer remains appropriate when the specification is already complete; a larger agency is better for programs requiring several full-time specialists at once.

Forward Deployed AI Engineer vs classic developer

The difference is not the programming language. It is ownership of discovery, implementation and the production outcome.

Starting point

Classic dev / subcontractorA spec to execute
Forward Deployed Engineer (my approach)The business problem to solve

Proximity to the need

Classic dev / subcontractorExecutes in a silo
Forward Deployed Engineer (my approach)Close to the client and the business

Deliverable

Classic dev / subcontractorCode, sometimes disconnected
Forward Deployed Engineer (my approach)A production solution that fits the need

Scope

Classic dev / subcontractorLimited to the requested task
Forward Deployed Engineer (my approach)Dev + consulting + integration + product

Very large multi-profile program

Classic dev / subcontractorA team absorbs it better
Forward Deployed Engineer (my approach)One person, ideal on a scoped problem

The FDE wins when the blocker is understanding the problem and building the right thing, fast, with one accountable person. For a very large multi-profile program, an agency stays more suitable.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

A developer who works very close to the client and the business to build concrete solutions fast. They combine several roles (developer, technical consultant, product builder, AI integrator) and ship a production system that solves a real problem, not isolated code.

How is it different from a classic developer?

A classic developer executes a spec, often in a silo. A Forward Deployed Engineer starts from the business problem, talks it through with the client, designs the fitting solution and ships it to production, owning the outcome end to end.

What is the difference between an FDE and a solutions engineer?

Both roles work close to customers. A solutions engineer often focuses on proving and configuring an existing platform, while a Forward Deployed Engineer takes broader responsibility for building, integrating and operating the custom production solution.

Can you work as a remote FDE for a US company?

Yes. I work asynchronously from Madagascar with written documentation, visible milestones and planned overlap for US meetings. You keep one accountable technical partner from discovery through deployment.

What solutions do you build?

Mostly AI agents (text and voice), n8n automations that connect your tools, and custom applications in Next.js + Supabase. Always aimed at a precise business problem: request classification, lead qualification, appointment booking, document processing, reporting.

How much does a contract Forward Deployed Engineer cost?

My standard international rate is $400 per day. Depending on scope, a first production release often ships in a few weeks. You receive a written scope and estimate within 48 hours, with no agency markup.
